Hey all,
Thanks for being patient.. how about a VDMX5 beta?
So, we're posting this on the forums a day early while we finish up some site changes, at which point VDMX5 will go on pre-sale and we'll start issuing out serial numbers and coupon codes for upgrading. Until then the beta will run in demo mode which is fully functional except for the ability to save set files.
The big news that goes along with this post is that we are discontinuing Grid and Grid Pro and only focusing on VDMX. This was a tough decision to make, but in the end we realized that any of our older applications could be more or less recreated within VDMX5. In fact, we've included some presets with the beta that resemble Grid and Grid Pro quite closely along with the beta version of VDMX5. We tried to come up with an upgrade policy that was fair for everyone whose bought our older products, but also takes into account all the hard work that we've put in over the past year writing VDMX5. See below for the details on that.
Guess you've waited long enough, so here's the link to download the beta:
http://www.vidvox.com/download/vdmx.php
Minimum requirements
1GHz PowerPC G4
Mac OS X 10.4.6 or later
QuickTime 7.0.4 or later
512MB of RAM
AGP, PCI Express or Intel graphics processor with at least 32MB of video memory and OpenGL hardware acceleration
Recommended requirements
2 GHz or faster PowerPC G5 or Intel Core processor
2 (or more) GB of RAM
PCI Express graphics processor with at least 128 MB of video memory and OpenGL hardware acceleration
Also, we've started on some documentation on the wiki which we'll be adding to in the following days, but this should be good to get folks started (plus we'll be on the forums fielding questions). Link to that wiki page here:

Info on the pre-sale & upgrading..
When running in demo mode, the beta version of VDMX5 is fully functional except for saving. To unlock set saving, you can purchase VDMX5 during the pre-sale for $250 and save $100 off the final retail price. Everyone who buys VDMX5 during the pre-sale will receive the final version for free.
For people who bought Grid Pro after January 10th, 2006 (the announcement of the Intel-Macs), VDMX5 will be a free crossgrade.
If you bought Grid Pro before January 10th, 2006, there is a $150 discount.
Owners of Grid, Grid2, and VDMX4 will receive $75 off.
More details on how to upgrade / purchase once the site changes are all finished. Just wanted to get something out there for everyone who is checking in 3 times a day to play with while we cross our t's and dot our lower case j's.

congrats on the beta - just wondering: I bought prophet back in the days and you guys allowed me to updgrade to gridPro for free (thanks by the way)
Just to get this straight - Am I eligible to any kind of discount of the full price or how do you plan to go about people like me?
Thanks for the info! |

props to vv for finally pushing this out.
what they've done is quite amazing: at avit in birmingham, may 2005, they had an aging vdmx, their new grid pro, and a realisation that you couldn't push max any further.... gp was shiny, but it was at the wall. but osx had matured for video, with core image et al, and so it was time to take the plunge. i'd wager an app like vdmx is probably one of the hardest apps to code out there, period, and they learnt to do that from scratch. so they haven't been hanging out here so much, but they've been doing massive leaps out of sight.
i had the privilege of beta testing it through around 20 builds over three months, and seen it grow from something that looks like vdmx to something that _is_ vdmx... and the devil is in the detail, yeeeeeeeeeeow. silly amount of hours, and hard work dealing with all those broken presets and explaining what you want over chat not a beer. but that is a drop in the ocean compared to vv: i can't even imagine how little sunlight vv have seen in the past year, they have been slaving away 24/7 for a year on end.
so yeah. the new vdmx is awesome. its got the genes of vdmx, so its a video studio that you can make whatever vj app you want in, but this time its natively for osx and so is limited by the machine, not the code. its also a bit like live video is about to have its desktop publishing revolution: the high-end hardware guys no longer have the monopoly, we can do it too, and with photoshop style artistry. you want some crazy-ass HD resolution? just drag the output window. you want to make some crazy interactive clips? load your quartz composer comp in and control it directly. you want soft light layering? of course.
