unfortunately the video doesn't really show the visuals much but you can still get an idea of what the setup looked like. i was projecting on 50 strips of paper arranged at random depths. i made a 'depth' mask which made it possible to pick different images for different depths. the depth info was also used to counter the effect of the image getting bigger on strips further away from the projector and to index the strips (sort off) so i could illuminate a single strip at a time. it took me and a friend about 8 hours to stick everything up and a couple of seconds to tear everything down at the end of the show:).
i wish i had a camera so i could have documented it better:/.
and here a short clip of another gig in the same club my friend took with his camera

thank you:).
it was done with a 'depth mask'. what i mean is, the mask was a gray scale image where the brightens represented the distance from the projector. the mask was then used in a glsl shader which calculated the position of each pixel in 3d. i wrote a couple of different shaders from the same base. i used some as transitions and some for effects (like the single strip thing or the omni light going between the strips). |

how did you calculate the depth mask to get the correct depth of the strips? tape measure ? it has a great result..
i've used depth mattes in after effects before but obviously thats getting information from a 3D package..
it set me to thinking if it would be possible to create depth mask information from a still image (in the room you are projecting) and then use depth data that to project onto a surface.. |
